ABOUT
The Malta Ranger Unit is a Maltese registered NGO (VO/2443) aiming to 'Empower Citizens to Protect the Environment’ via education, crime prevention and monitoring of environmental illegalities.
We focus upon the ‘Environment Protection Act - Chapter 549’ of Maltese Law alongside legislations directly or indirectly related the Environment.
"Empower Citizens to Protect the Environment"
Malta Ranger Unit serves as a point of reference for the reporting of environmental crimes. Our Rangers follow up on reports received from the Public by visiting the sites where infringements is or could be taking place.
When infringements are found to be taking place, MRU files a report with the Environmental Protection Unit Police or applicable Authority (Fisheries Department, Environment and Resources Authority, Planning Authority etc).
Our intention is to increase the Public’s knowledge about Malta’s environmental laws through educational campaigns and also increase successfully concluded prosecutions by the Authorities in Court.
We are proud to be part of The European Ranger Federation (ERF) which is a pan-European federation of Park Ranger associations. It is one of the 8 regional groups of the International Ranger Federation.
A Ranger is a person involved in the practical management, protection and preservation of all aspects of wild areas, historical and cultural sites. Rangers provide recreational opportunities and interpretation of these sites whilst providing links between local communities, protected areas and area administration.
Currently there are more than 30 member Ranger associations in the European Ranger Federation representing over 5,000 professional Rangers.
